Sri Lanka evacuated 208 crew members from an Iranian naval vessel after a US submarine sank the frigate IRIS Dena. The second vessel will be moved to Trincomalee for safety.
Sri Lanka has evacuated 208 crew members from an Iranian naval vessel after tensions escalated in the ongoing conflict between Iran and the United States. The evacuation took place a day after a US submarine attack reportedly sank an Iranian frigate, killing dozens of sailors and intensifying fears of a wider naval confrontation in the region.
Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake confirmed the evacuation on Thursday, saying the move was taken on humanitarian grounds to protect lives amid growing security concerns in international waters.
The incident highlights the growing risks in the Indian Ocean region, where naval forces from multiple countries are now operating due to the expanding conflict in the Middle East.

Sri Lanka Moves To Protect Iranian Sailors
According to Sri Lankan authorities, the navy successfully evacuated 208 Iranian sailors and cadets from the Iranian naval vessel IRIS Bushehr after the ship reported a technical problem.
The vessel had developed an engine fault, raising safety concerns at a time when Iranian naval assets were already under threat following the recent US strike on another Iranian warship.
President Dissanayake said Sri Lanka decided to intervene purely on humanitarian grounds.
“We are not taking sides in this conflict, but while maintaining our neutrality we are taking action to save lives,” he said in a televised address.
He emphasised that protecting human life was the primary objective of the operation.
“No person should die in a war like this. Every life is equally precious,” the president added.
Warship To Be Moved To Trincomalee
Sri Lanka’s navy will also take operational control of the IRIS Bushehr temporarily and relocate it to the northeastern port of Trincomalee, one of the country’s major naval bases.
Officials said the move is intended to ensure the vessel remains safe while tensions remain high in the region.
The port of Trincomalee is strategically important because of its deep natural harbour, making it one of the most secure locations in the Indian Ocean for naval vessels requiring shelter.
Once the Iranian crew members are transferred ashore, Sri Lankan naval personnel will crew the ship while it remains in Sri Lankan waters.
Authorities said the decision was necessary because the vessel could potentially become a target amid the escalating military conflict.
US Submarine Sinks Iranian Frigate
The evacuation comes just one day after a US submarine reportedly struck and sank the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena in international waters.
According to reports, the attack resulted in the deaths of dozens of Iranian sailors, marking one of the most serious naval incidents in the ongoing confrontation between Washington and Tehran.
Iranian officials said the frigate had been returning from a naval exercise in India when it was attacked.
Iran’s ambassador to India, Mohammad Fathali, told the Press Trust of India that the vessel was unarmed at the time of the attack and was carrying nearly 130 sailors.
The ship had previously visited Visakhapatnam, a major naval port on India’s eastern coast, as part of the exercise.
The attack reportedly took place around 2,000 miles away from Iranian territory, raising questions about the expanding geographical scope of the conflict.
Iran Condemns The Attack
Iran strongly condemned the strike on its naval vessel, describing it as a dangerous escalation and an unlawful act.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi criticised the United States for attacking what he described as a guest vessel returning from international exercises.
“The US has perpetrated an atrocity at sea, 2,000 miles away from Iran’s shores,” Araghchi wrote in a post on social media platform X.
He warned that Washington would face consequences for what he called a dangerous precedent.
“Frigate Dena, a guest of India’s Navy, carrying almost 130 sailors, was struck in international waters without warning,” he said.
“Mark my words: The US will come to bitterly regret the precedent it has set.”
Rising Tensions In International Waters
The incident is part of a broader escalation in tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel, which has expanded beyond land-based conflicts to include naval operations and maritime security concerns.
Military analysts say attacks on naval vessels could significantly raise the risk of wider conflict, especially in key maritime routes connecting the Middle East and Asia.
The Indian Ocean and nearby shipping lanes are vital for global trade, energy transport, and naval movement.
Any military confrontation in these waters could potentially disrupt shipping routes and raise security concerns for multiple countries in the region.
Sri Lanka Maintains Neutral Stance
Despite the geopolitical tensions, Sri Lanka has reiterated that it is not aligning with any side in the conflict.
President Dissanayake stressed that the evacuation operation was conducted solely for humanitarian purposes and to prevent further loss of life.
Sri Lanka has historically maintained a neutral foreign policy, particularly in conflicts involving major global powers.
By assisting the Iranian sailors while ensuring the safety of the vessel, Sri Lanka aims to balance humanitarian responsibilities with diplomatic neutrality.

Situation Continues To Develop
Authorities have said the Iranian sailors evacuated from the vessel will remain in Sri Lanka temporarily while further arrangements are made.
Meanwhile, international observers are closely monitoring the situation as tensions continue to rise across the region.
With naval forces operating across multiple seas and strategic waterways, experts warn that any further military escalation could have serious regional and global implications.
For now, Sri Lanka’s intervention has helped prevent further casualties and provided temporary safety for the stranded sailors.
