Six Years On-Man Convicted for Brutal Murder of Two Sisters in Chandigarh’s Sector 22 :
Prime Vista News
Nearly six years after a shocking double murder that had shaken Chandigarh, a local court on Friday convicted a 35-year-old man for killing two sisters at their rented accommodation in Sector 22 in August 2019. The court will pronounce the quantum of punishment on February 9.
The court of the Additional District and Sessions Judge held the accused, Kuldeep Singh, guilty under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code. The verdict brings closure to a case that drew widespread attention due to its brutality and the nature of the crime.
Crime That Shocked the City
The incident took place on the night of August 14–15, 2019, when Manpreet Kaur (28) and her younger sister Rajwant Kaur (27) were murdered while asleep at their residence in Sector 22, Chandigarh. Both women were originally from Baluana village in Punjab’s Fazilka district and were living in Chandigarh for work.
Kuldeep Singh, a resident of Zirakpur and an employee at a call Centre in Mohali at the time, was known to Manpreet and had been in a relationship with her for several years.

Prosecution’s Case: Motive Rooted in Suspicion
According to the prosecution, Kuldeep and Manpreet had been in a relationship since 2010. Over time, Manpreet began distancing herself from him, which led Kuldeep to suspect that she was involved with someone else.
Driven by suspicion and anger, the accused allegedly decided to confront Manpreet. On the night of August 14, he travelled to her residence in Sector 22 with the intention of checking her mobile phone.
Chilling Sequence of Events
The prosecution detailed a disturbing sequence of events that unfolded that night. Kuldeep allegedly climbed onto the roof of the building and jumped into the rear balcony of the second-floor accommodation where the sisters lived. Both victims were asleep at the time.
He managed to open the rear door and entered the room. Kuldeep reportedly attempted to unlock Manpreet’s mobile phone but was unsuccessful. Shortly thereafter, Rajwant woke up and went to the washroom. Manpreet also woke up and noticed the accused inside the room, leading to a heated argument.
During the altercation, Kuldeep allegedly strangled Manpreet and smashed her head against the floor. When Rajwant returned from the washroom and tried to intervene, he strangled her as well.
To ensure both sisters were dead, the accused repeatedly stabbed them with a pair of scissors. After committing the crime, he locked the room from outside and fled the scene.
Escape and Arrest
CCTV footage from the area showed Kuldeep leaving the house with a bag and riding away on his motorcycle. A few hours later, he boarded a bus to Ambala and then took a train to Delhi in an attempt to evade arrest.
The accused, who is the son of a retired Union Territory police inspector, was eventually traced and arrested by the police at the New Delhi railway station.
Trial and Verdict
During the trial, the defence argued that Kuldeep had been falsely implicated and questioned the prosecution’s narrative. However, the court, after examining the evidence, including CCTV footage, forensic findings, and witness testimonies, rejected the defence arguments.
The judge concluded that the prosecution had successfully established the chain of circumstances and proven Kuldeep’s guilt beyond reasonable doubt.
“The evidence on record clearly points to the accused’s involvement in the offence,” the court observed while delivering the conviction order.
Sentencing on February 9
With the conviction now secured, the court has scheduled February 9 for arguments on sentencing. The quantum of punishment will be pronounced on the same day.
Legal experts note that the case falls under one of the most serious categories of murder, involving premeditation, extreme violence, and the killing of two unarmed victims inside their home.
A Case That Left a Lasting Impact
The double murder had sparked outrage and fear among residents at the time, raising concerns about safety in residential areas. For the families of the victims, the conviction marks a significant moment after years of waiting for justice.
As the city awaits the sentencing decision, the case stands as a grim reminder of how obsession, suspicion, and unchecked anger can lead to devastating consequences.
