Pakistan Reverses Boycott, Confirms February 15 T20 World Cup Match Against India :
Pakistan has officially reversed its earlier decision to boycott its ICC Men’s T20 World Cup fixture against India, clearing uncertainty over one of the tournament’s most anticipated matches. The high-profile encounter is now set to take place on February 15 in Colombo.
The development follows sustained diplomatic and cricketing engagement involving Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and the International Cricket Council (ICC), which helped resolve the standoff that had raised concerns over the tournament schedule.
Government Directive Confirms Participation
In an official statement, the Government of Pakistan confirmed it had directed the national cricket team to take the field.
“In view of the outcomes achieved in multilateral discussions, as well as the request of friendly countries, the Government of Pakistan hereby directs the Pakistan National Cricket Team to take the field on February 15, 2026, for its scheduled fixture in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup,” the statement read.
The government said the decision was taken to protect the spirit of cricket and ensure continuity of the global event across participating nations.
The confirmation effectively ends days of uncertainty surrounding the fixture, which is among the most watched rivalries in international cricket.
Diplomatic Efforts Behind the Breakthrough
The reversal followed diplomatic outreach from Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif received a personal call from Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who urged a resolution to the impasse. According to officials, the Sri Lankan leader highlighted the broader impact such disputes could have on international cricket and regional sporting cooperation.
At the same time, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Aminul Islam publicly appealed to Pakistan to participate in the match. Speaking from Dhaka, Islam said Pakistan’s involvement was essential for the “greater good of the game” and the stability of the global cricket ecosystem.
“Following my short visit to Pakistan and given the forthcoming outcomes of our discussions, I request Pakistan to play the ICC T20 World Cup game on 15 February against India for the benefit of the entire cricket ecosystem,” Islam said.
Role of the Pakistan Cricket Board
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi briefed Prime Minister Sharif after holding discussions with ICC officials and representatives from Bangladesh.
Naqvi had earlier indicated that a final decision would take time but later confirmed support for Bangladesh’s position.
“Bangladesh’s stance was valid, so we had to back them,” he said.
He also dismissed speculation that Pakistan’s decision was influenced by the possibility of sanctions.
“We are not ones to be afraid of threats. Everyone knows our Field Marshal. We are not worried about any sanctions,” Naqvi stated.

Bangladesh’s Position and ICC Assurances
Bangladesh had earlier been removed from the tournament after refusing to play matches in India, citing security concerns. The ICC later confirmed that no financial, sporting or administrative penalties would be imposed on the BCB for its decision.
Bangladesh was replaced in the competition by Scotland, though it retains the right to approach the ICC’s Dispute Resolution Committee if it chooses.
In a further development, the ICC agreed in principle to award Bangladesh hosting rights for a global event between 2028 and 2031. The governing body may also consider allocating the next men’s Under-19 World Cup to the country.
Stability Restored Ahead of Key Fixture
With Pakistan’s confirmation, tournament organisers have avoided a disruption that could have overshadowed the competition. The India–Pakistan fixture consistently draws significant global attention, both on and off the field.
Officials involved in the discussions emphasised that the resolution was aimed at preserving competitive integrity and ensuring the smooth conduct of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
The February 15 clash in Colombo now proceeds as scheduled, restoring certainty to fans, broadcasters and participating teams.
