India cricketer Ishan Kishan reveals he lost his cousin in a car accident a day before the T20 World Cup 2026 final and dedicated India’s historic victory to her.
India wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan delivered an emotional message after India’s historic victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final, revealing that he had lost his cousin in a tragic car accident just a day before the match.
Despite the personal loss, Kishan chose to take the field for India national cricket team and played a crucial role in the team’s successful campaign. After the final, he dedicated the victory to his cousin, saying the match was played in her memory.
India secured their third T20 World Cup title with a commanding victory over the New Zealand national cricket team at the Narendra Modi Stadium, becoming the first team in the tournament’s history to successfully defend the title.
Kishan reveals personal tragedy after the final
Speaking during the post-match press conference, Kishan shared the heartbreaking news about the loss in his family.
He revealed that his cousin had died in a car accident the day before the final, making the match one of the most emotionally challenging moments of his career.
“To be honest, before the game, I lost my cousin yesterday in a car accident. I played well for her,” Kishan said.
The left-handed batter said he dedicated his performance and India’s victory to her memory, adding that the moment held special significance as the final coincided with International Women’s Day.
“I dedicate this win to her, and today is Women’s Day, so it makes it all the more special,” he added.
His emotional statement resonated with fans and teammates, highlighting the mental strength required to perform at the highest level while dealing with personal grief.
Hardik Pandya’s advice helped him stay focused
Kishan also credited teammate Hardik Pandya for helping him remain focused on the team despite the tragedy.
According to Kishan, Pandya encouraged him to prioritise the team and channel his emotions into the match.
“I spoke to Hardik bhai, he told me to put the team ahead,” Kishan said.
The advice helped Kishan stay mentally composed and continue contributing to India’s campaign during one of the most difficult moments of his life.
Pandya’s support, he said, played a key role in helping him maintain focus on the bigger objective helping India win the World Cup.

A shift in mindset behind Kishan’s strong form
Kishan also spoke about a change in his mental approach to the game, explaining that he has recently stopped overthinking and instead focuses only on things within his control.
The wicketkeeper-batter credited senior Indian cricketer Virat Kohli for inspiring that mindset.
“I have stopped thinking too much. Just do your work and not think about the things which are not in your control, and that’s what Virat bhai always did,” Kishan explained.
According to him, this simpler approach to the game has helped him perform more freely and consistently on the field.
Conversation with captain Suryakumar Yadav before the tournament
Kishan also shared an interesting conversation he had with India captain Suryakumar Yadav before the tournament began.
He revealed that when Yadav called him before the World Cup squad announcement, he immediately sensed something important.
“When Surya bhai called, I took a screenshot and thought it was for the World Cup,” Kishan said with a smile.
According to Kishan, the captain jokingly asked him whether he could help India win the tournament.
“He asked me ‘World Cup jeetwayega kya?’ I said ‘aap bharosa karoge kya?’ and he said ‘chal kiya’.”
The conversation became a motivating moment for Kishan, who went on to deliver one of the most impressive batting performances of the tournament.
Kishan among tournament’s top performers
Kishan was one of India’s standout players during the 2026 T20 World Cup.
The left-handed batter finished as the fourth-highest run-scorer in the tournament, scoring 317 runs in nine matches at a remarkable strike rate of 193.29.
His aggressive batting style helped India maintain momentum in several matches and provided the team with quick starts at the top of the order.
Kishan also scored three half-centuries during the tournament, underlining his consistency and ability to perform on big occasions.
His contributions were crucial in helping India reach the final and ultimately lift the trophy.
Historic victory for India
India’s triumph in the final was not only a personal milestone for several players but also a historic moment for Indian cricket.
The victory marked India’s third T20 World Cup title and made them the first team to successfully defend the trophy in the tournament’s history.
The win also helped erase painful memories from the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup final defeat at the same venue in Ahmedabad.
For Kishan, however, the victory carried deeper emotional significance.
While the team celebrated a historic achievement, he remembered a personal loss and dedicated the triumph to someone who, he said, would always remain part of his journey.
