An Indian-origin student has been identified among the two people killed in a mass shooting outside a bar in Austin, Texas, early Sunday morning. Authorities confirmed that 21-year-old Savitha Shan and 19-year-old Ryder Harrington were fatally shot in the incident, which also left 14 others injured. The suspected gunman was killed in an exchange of fire with responding police officers.
The shooting occurred in Austin’s well-known entertainment district, sending shockwaves through the local community and beyond. Officials are continuing to investigate the motive behind the attack, with federal agencies now involved.
Victims Identified
Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis confirmed the identities of the victims during a press briefing. While authorities initially said they were verifying the victims’ academic affiliations, several media reports indicated that Savitha Shan was a student at the University of Texas at Austin. Ryder Harrington was reportedly studying at Texas Tech University.
Friends and community members have begun paying tribute to the young victims, describing them as bright and ambitious. Officials said they are working closely with the families during this difficult time.
FBI Joins Probe
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has joined the investigation through its Joint Terrorism Task Force. Authorities stated that there were certain indicators linked to the suspect and his vehicle suggesting a “potential nexus to terrorism.” However, investigators emphasised that it is too early to determine whether the attack was ideologically motivated.
FBI officials said they are examining all possible angles, including whether the suspect may have self-radicalised. The bureau has deployed its Evidence Response Team and is coordinating closely with the Austin Police Department.
In a public statement, FBI San Antonio expressed condolences to the families of the victims and assured the public that the investigation remains active and ongoing.
What Happened
According to police, the shooting took place outside a popular beer garden on Rio Grande Street in downtown Austin. Officers received reports of an active shooter around 1:39 am. Emergency responders arrived at the scene within a minute and began administering medical aid to victims.
Investigators believe the suspect drove around the block in an SUV before opening fire from the vehicle’s window at patrons seated outside the establishment. He then exited the vehicle and continued shooting while walking along the street.
Responding officers confronted the gunman and fatally shot him. Authorities recovered a handgun and a rifle at the scene, and multiple additional weapons were reportedly found inside the suspect’s vehicle.
Suspect Details
Multiple US officials identified the suspect as Ndiaga Diagne, a 53-year-old naturalised American citizen originally from Senegal. Reports state that he arrived in the United States in 2006 and became a citizen in 2013. He had previously lived in New York before relocating to Texas.
Investigators believe he acted alone. Law enforcement sources indicated that the suspect had prior mental health episodes in Austin. Authorities are examining whether extremist ideology influenced the attack or if there were any connections to international networks.
The Office of the Director of National Intelligence confirmed that its National Counterterrorism Center is coordinating with the FBI and local authorities to assess potential foreign links.

US President Donald Trump has been briefed on the incident, according to the White House.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott said the state is mourning the loss of lives and announced enhanced security measures in downtown Austin. He directed the Texas Military Department to increase patrols and surveillance in the 6th Street District as a precautionary step.
US Senator Ted Cruz stated that authorities do not yet know whether the shooting was directly linked to terrorism, reiterating that the investigation is ongoing.
