IIT Madras Introduces Fully Online Bachelor of Science Programme in Aeronautics and Space Technology: JEE Not Required !

Prime Vista News
The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has announced the launch of a new Bachelor of Science (BS) programme in Aeronautics and Space Technology, marking a significant expansion of its online education offerings. The programme will be delivered entirely in online mode and will not require applicants to qualify through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).

The announcement was made on February 9, 2026, during a virtual launch event attended by senior faculty members and representatives from the aerospace and civil aviation sectors, including officials associated with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

Programme Structure and Mode of Delivery

The BS in Aeronautics and Space Technology has been designed to provide foundational and advanced knowledge in aerospace engineering disciplines while maintaining flexibility for learners from diverse academic and professional backgrounds. The programme will be offered through a structured online format, combining recorded lectures, live tutorial sessions, and interactive discussion forums.

Students will be able to progress through the programme at a defined pace aligned with academic milestones. Examinations will be conducted primarily on Sundays and will consist of a combination of centre-based assessments and online proctored examinations, depending on the nature of the course and level of study.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants who have completed Class 12 or an equivalent qualifying examination are eligible to apply. Unlike traditional undergraduate engineering programmes at IITs, this course does not require candidates to appear for or qualify through JEE.

IIT Madras stated that the admission framework has been developed to broaden access to quality technical education while maintaining academic rigor consistent with the institute’s standards.

Curriculum and Academic Progression

The curriculum covers key areas relevant to aeronautics and space technology, including aerodynamics, propulsion systems, aircraft structures, space systems, and computational analysis. As students progress through the programme, they will engage with increasingly advanced technical concepts and applied problem-solving.

At the diploma level, learners will undertake practical projects using industry-relevant tools such as computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element methods (FEM). Internship opportunities will also be available, allowing students to gain exposure to real-world aerospace applications.

At the BS degree level, students will be required to complete a capstone project focused on the conceptual design and analysis of an aircraft or spacecraft, integrating knowledge acquired throughout the programme.

Career Opportunities and Higher Education Pathways

According to IIT Madras, graduates of the programme will be well-positioned to pursue opportunities across a range of sectors. These include public sector undertakings, private aerospace and aviation companies, engineering consultancy firms, research organizations, and technology-driven start-ups.

The institute further noted that the programme curriculum is aligned to support preparation for competitive examinations such as the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). Graduates may also choose to pursue higher studies at leading institutions, including IITs and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), subject to prevailing admission criteria.

Opportunities for Academic Advancement at IIT Madras

IIT Madras indicated that top-performing students enrolled in the online BS programme may be considered for additional academic opportunities. Depending on academic performance and eligibility, such students could be evaluated for entry into on-campus programmes or advanced degree pathways at IIT Madras.

This provision reflects the institute’s broader approach of integrating online and on-campus education ecosystems, while ensuring merit-based progression.

Learning Support and Student Engagement

The programme incorporates multiple learning support mechanisms, including live doubt-clearing sessions, peer discussion platforms, and structured academic guidance. Faculty-led tutorials and moderated forums are intended to foster sustained engagement and collaborative learning despite the online delivery format.

IIT Madras emphasized that academic evaluation and assessment standards will be consistent with the institute’s established practices.

Expanding Access to Technical Education

With the introduction of the BS in Aeronautics and Space Technology, IIT Madras continues its efforts to expand access to high-quality technical education beyond conventional entry pathways. The programme is expected to attract students aspiring to build careers in aerospace and space-related fields without the constraints of location or traditional admission examinations.

Further details regarding application timelines, fee structure, and course schedules are expected to be released through official institute channels.
