Massive Fire Claims Six Lives in Meerut Residential Area

At least six people, including five children, lost their lives after a massive fire engulfed a residential house in Meerut’s Lisadi Gate area late Monday evening. A 55-year-old woman sustained serious burn injuries and is currently undergoing treatment, police officials confirmed on Tuesday.

The tragic incident occurred in Kidwai Nagar, a densely populated locality, sending shockwaves through the neighborhood and leaving families and residents in deep distress.

Fire Breaks Out Late Evening in Kidwai Nagar

According to police, the fire broke out around 8 pm at the residence of Iqbal Ahmad, located in Gali No. 3 near the Surahi Wali Masjid. Emergency services were alerted shortly thereafter, and police along with fire brigade teams rushed to the spot.

Meerut Superintendent of Police Avinash Pandey said seven people were rescued from the burning house and rushed to the civil hospital with severe burn injuries.

“The incident occurred around 8 pm. Seven people were admitted to the hospital. Doctors later declared six of them dead,” Pandey told reporters during his visit to the hospital.

Fire Brigade Brings Blaze Under Control

Police officials said information about the fire was received at around 8:49 pm, following which firefighting operations were launched immediately. Fire brigade personnel worked for nearly an hour to bring the flames under control.

However, by the time rescue teams managed to enter the house, most of the occupants had suffered critical burn injuries due to the intensity of the fire and the rapid spread of flames.

Stored Cloth Accelerated Spread of Fire

Initial investigations revealed that tailoring work was being carried out at the house, where a large quantity of cloth had been stored. Police said the presence of flammable materials caused the fire to spread rapidly, leaving little time for those inside to escape.

“The house was being used for tailoring work. The stored fabric acted as fuel and intensified the fire,” a senior police officer said.

This factor significantly worsened the situation, turning the fire into a deadly inferno within minutes.

Short Circuit Suspected as Cause

Prima facie, police suspect that a short circuit triggered the fire, though a detailed investigation is currently underway to determine the exact cause.

Officials said forensic teams will inspect the electrical wiring and appliances used in the house to establish whether safety norms were violated.

“At this stage, a short circuit appears to be the likely cause. A detailed probe has been initiated,” police said.

Children Among the Deceased

The victims include five children and a young woman, underscoring the devastating impact of the incident on the family.

Police identified the deceased as Rukhsar (25), Mahbish (12), Hammad (4), Akdas (4), Nabia (4 months), and Inayat (4 months). All were residents of the same house in Kidwai Nagar.

The loss of two infants and three young children has left the community stunned and grieving.

Elderly Woman Injured, Undergoing Treatment

Ameer Bano (55), the only survivor from the household, sustained serious burn injuries and is currently receiving treatment at the civil hospital.

Hospital authorities said her condition remains stable but critical, and she is under close medical observation.

Doctors are providing all necessary care, officials added.

Grief and Shock Grip the Neighborhood

Following the incident, a pall of grief descended over Kidwai Nagar as neighbors gathered outside the charred house in shock and disbelief.

Residents described the family as quiet and hardworking and said the tragedy has deeply affected the entire locality.

“We heard screams and saw flames coming out of the house. Everything happened so fast,” said a neighbor who witnessed the aftermath.

Authorities Assure Investigation and Support

Police officials said the administration will provide necessary assistance to the affected family and ensure a thorough investigation into the incident.

They also urged residents to regularly inspect electrical wiring and avoid storing flammable materials inside homes without proper safety measures.

The deadly fire in Meerut serves as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by faulty electrical systems and unsafe storage practices in residential areas. As authorities investigate the cause, the focus remains on supporting the grieving family and preventing similar tragedies in the future.

The incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for fire safety awareness, especially in densely populated urban neighborhoods.
