New facility at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport strengthens North-East India’s aviation and connectivity ambitions
The Adani Group has operationalised a new terminal at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBIA) in Guwahati, significantly expanding aviation capacity in India’s North-East. With the commencement of commercial operations on Sunday evening, the airport’s annual passenger handling capacity has increased to 13.1 million, marking a major infrastructure milestone for the region.
The new terminal comes at a time when Guwahati continues to emerge as a critical gateway to the North-East, driven by steady growth in passenger traffic and increasing strategic importance in domestic and international aviation networks.

Phased Operational Rollout
The terminal’s launch followed a phased, systems-led activation process designed to ensure operational readiness. Airport authorities conducted live trials covering check-in operations, baggage handling systems, security screening protocols and aircraft turnaround procedures before opening the facility to passengers.
The terminal was formally inaugurated earlier by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 20, 2025, with commercial services beginning after the successful completion of technical validations and operational simulations.
High-Level Attendance Marks Operational Launch
The start of commercial operations was attended by Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and Jeet Adani, Director of Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL). The launch event featured the ceremonial issuance of the first boarding pass at the new terminal, followed by the arrival of an Akasa Air flight from Mumbai.
Traditional lamp-lighting ceremonies and cultural performances were organised at the arrivals forecourt, showcasing the cultural identity of Assam. The performances involved local artisans, tea garden workers, frontline airport staff and personnel from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), reflecting the project’s emphasis on regional representation.

Leadership Views on Regional Impact
Chief Minister Sarma described the terminal as a transformative development for the state, highlighting both economic and cultural significance.
“I express my gratitude and we are thankful to Gautam Adani for keeping his commitment of investing ₹50,000 crore made during Advantage Assam 2.0 last year. With the operationalisation of this new terminal, Assam’s tourism will get a boost. It will be a gamechanger for Assam. The culture of Assam has been respected in the construction of this terminal, and as Assamese, we are proud of it,” he said.
Jeet Adani emphasised the broader vision behind the expansion, describing it as more than a commercial achievement.
“Today is more than a commercial milestone. It is a proud moment for the people of Assam and the North-East. This achievement belongs to the countless hands and hearts that turned vision into reality,” he said, adding that the development aligns with India’s national goal of building future-ready infrastructure.
Traffic Growth and Strategic Positioning
Guwahati has witnessed sustained aviation growth over the past decade and now ranks among the fastest-expanding non-metro airports in the country. Passenger traffic has crossed nine million annually in recent years, placing the airport among India’s top 10–12 busiest airports.
Currently, LGBIA connects 21 domestic destinations and three international cities Bangkok, Paro and Singapore. The airport handles more than 130 aircraft movements daily, and the expanded infrastructure is expected to support new routes, higher flight frequencies and stronger connectivity with Southeast Asian aviation corridors.
Officials believe the enhanced capacity will further position Guwahati as a regional aviation hub, facilitating trade, tourism and mobility across the North-East.

Operational Readiness and Passenger Experience
Ahead of the launch, airport authorities conducted comprehensive system validation exercises involving airlines, ground-handling agencies and emergency response teams. Digital integrations, including Digi Yatra-enabled passenger processing, improved wayfinding systems and centralized communication platforms, are already operational.
Retail and food-and-beverage outlets within the terminal will be rolled out in phases, with authorities focusing initially on operational efficiency and passenger flow management.
Architecture Rooted in Regional Identity
Designed by renowned Indian architect Nuru Karim, the terminal’s architecture draws inspiration from Assam’s iconic kopou phool (foxtail orchid). The structure incorporates more than 140 metric tonnes of bamboo, reflecting traditional bholuka bamboo craftsmanship and the bamboo-based architectural heritage of Arunachal Pradesh’s Apatani tribe.
A distinctive vaulted roof enables natural light dispersion across the terminal, while an amphitheatre-style arrivals forecourt highlights regional art and performance traditions. The terminal’s design received the International Architecture Award 2025, recognising its successful integration of cultural identity with modern infrastructure.
Adani Airports’ Growing Footprint
Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport is operated by Adani Airport Holdings Ltd through its subsidiary Guwahati International Airport Limited (GIAL). AAHL currently manages airports in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thiruvananthapuram, Lucknow, Jaipur, Ahmedabad and Mangaluru, making it one of India’s largest private airport operators.
With the Guwahati expansion now operational, the project underscores the group’s broader strategy of strengthening regional aviation infrastructure while aligning growth with local culture and national development goals.
