Former Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir questioned a key dismissal during India’s win over West Indies after his prediction about India missing the T20 World Cup semifinals proved incorrect.
Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir has sparked debate following India’s qualification for the semifinals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, after raising questions over a crucial dismissal during India’s victory against West Indies in the Super 8 stage.
Amir had earlier predicted that India would fail to reach the tournament’s final four. However, India’s five-wicket win over West Indies in Kolkata ensured Suryakumar Yadav’s side secured a semifinal berth, proving the prediction incorrect.
Following the result, Amir acknowledged India’s win but pointed to what he described as a controversial moment that, in his view, could have changed the outcome of the match.

Amir Questions Hetmyer’s Dismissal
The incident in question occurred during the 12th over of the West Indies innings when Shimron Hetmyer attempted an attacking shot against Jasprit Bumrah. The ball was collected by wicketkeeper Sanju Samson, prompting a confident appeal from the Indian players.
On-field umpire Chris Gaffaney raised his finger, adjudging Hetmyer caught behind. The West Indies batter immediately opted for a review, expressing uncertainty over the decision.
Television replays indicated contact between bat and ball, after which the original decision was upheld. Despite the confirmation, Amir suggested that the dismissal remained debatable.
Speaking on the Pakistani television show Haarna Mana Hai, Amir said he believed Hetmyer was unlucky to be given out.
“I feel that Hetmyer’s dismissal was controversial. I don’t think he was out. If he had stayed longer and the score had reached around 220 or 230, India could have been knocked out,” Amir said.
Praise for Sanju Samson Despite Criticism
While questioning the decision, Amir also credited Indian batter Sanju Samson for delivering a decisive performance during the chase. Samson’s unbeaten 97 off 50 balls guided India to victory in what was effectively a knockout encounter.
Amir described the innings as one of the finest of Samson’s career, particularly given the pressure of the situation.
“Where credit is due, it should be given. Sanju Samson played the best innings of his life. Doing it in a do-or-die match makes it even more special,” he said, noting that he had previously followed Samson’s performances in franchise cricket and international matches.

Concerns Raised Over India’s Overall Performance
Despite India’s progression to the semifinals, Amir maintained that the team still showed areas of concern during the match. He pointed toward lapses in fielding and inconsistencies in bowling performance.
According to the former pacer, India relied heavily on Jasprit Bumrah, who once again delivered an impactful spell with the ball.
“If you analyse purely from a cricketing perspective, India are not playing consistently good cricket. Their fielding needs improvement, and apart from Bumrah, other bowlers are conceding runs,” Amir said.
He added that dropped chances and fielding errors during the West Indies innings allowed additional scoring opportunities, which could prove costly against stronger opponents in the knockout stages.
India March Ahead in Tournament
India’s victory over West Indies confirmed their place among the final four teams of the T20 World Cup 2026 alongside South Africa, New Zealand and England.
With momentum on their side following a successful chase under pressure, India will now prepare for a semifinal clash against England scheduled for March 5.
Amir’s remarks have since generated discussion among cricket followers, highlighting how individual moments and umpiring decisions often remain central talking points in high-stakes tournament matches.
