West Indies captain Shai Hope hailed Sanju Samson’s unbeaten 97 after India defeated West Indies by five wickets in the T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 clash at Eden Gardens.
West Indies captain Shai Hope heaped praise on India’s Sanju Samson after the wicketkeeper-batter produced a match-winning performance to guide India into the semifinals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. Samson’s unbeaten knock helped India secure a crucial five-wicket victory over West Indies in their Super 8s knockout clash at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday.

Chasing a competitive target of 196 runs in a must-win encounter, Samson anchored India’s innings with an unbeaten 97 off 50 deliveries, ensuring his side crossed the finish line despite early setbacks. The victory confirmed India’s place in the semifinals alongside South Africa, New Zealand and England, with Suryakumar Yadav-led India now scheduled to face England on March 5.
Shai Hope Credits Samson’s Experience and Composure
Speaking during the post-match press conference, Hope acknowledged Samson’s quality and experience, stating that the Indian batter played a decisive role in shifting momentum during the run chase.
“He played really well. He is a good player, and it was also a good batting surface,” Hope said, while reflecting on the conditions at Eden Gardens that often favour chasing teams under lights.
The West Indies skipper, however, emphasized that the innings deserved full recognition regardless of pitch conditions. According to Hope, Samson displayed control and confidence throughout the chase, allowing India to recover after losing early wickets.
Taking nothing away from the performance, Hope added that Samson’s ability to pace the innings from start to finish made the difference between the two sides.
“He shot the ball very nicely from the beginning to the end and paced the innings really well. He was smart and calculated with the way he played his strokes. You must give him full credit for that innings,” Hope said, while admitting that West Indies would have preferred such a performance not to come against them.

West Indies Post Competitive Total
Earlier in the match, India won the toss and opted to field first. West Indies made a steady start, with Roston Chase scoring 40 off 25 balls and captain Shai Hope contributing 32 runs as the opening pair added 68 runs for the first wicket.
Despite losing momentum midway through the innings and slipping to 119/4 in 14.1 overs, West Indies regained control through aggressive finishing efforts. Shimron Hetmyer provided momentum with a quick 27 off 12 deliveries before an unbeaten partnership between Jason Holder and Rovman Powell accelerated the scoring rate.
Holder remained unbeaten on 37 from 22 balls, while Powell added 34 not out from 19 deliveries. Their late surge helped West Indies post 195/4 in 20 overs, setting India a challenging target in a high-pressure fixture.
For India, Jasprit Bumrah emerged as the standout bowler with figures of 2/36, while Varun Chakaravarthy and Hardik Pandya claimed one wicket each.

Samson Leads India’s Successful Chase
India’s run chase began cautiously as the team lost two early wickets and was reduced to 41/2 inside the powerplay. Samson then rebuilt the innings alongside captain Suryakumar Yadav, adding a crucial 58-run partnership that steadied the chase.
With required run rate pressure mounting, Samson shifted gears while maintaining control of the innings. He went on to build important partnerships with Tilak Varma, who scored 27 off 15 balls, followed by contributions from Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube.
Displaying calculated aggression and shot selection, Samson guided India towards the target without allowing West Indies bowlers to regain control. His unbeaten innings ensured India completed the chase with five wickets in hand.
India March Into Semifinals
The result proved decisive as both teams entered the contest level on points in the Super 8 standings, making the Kolkata clash effectively a knockout encounter.
India’s victory keeps their T20 World Cup campaign on track as they prepare for a high-stakes semifinal against England. Samson’s performance, widely regarded as one of his finest international knocks, now stands as a defining moment in India’s journey through the tournament.
