A 22-year-old Sikh nurse in Victoria, Australia, alleges he was assaulted by three men after racial abuse outside a gym. Police are investigating the attack as community concerns grow.

A 22-year-old Sikh man has alleged he was violently assaulted outside a gym in Victoria, Australia, following a confrontation that began with racial slurs and escalated into physical violence. The incident has reignited concerns within the Indian community about racially motivated attacks.

The victim, Harmanpreet Singh, a nurse based in Corio, said the incident occurred late Tuesday night after he completed a workout at a local gym. According to Singh, three men began directing racial abuse toward him inside the facility without any prior interaction.

Singh alleged the men continued harassing him during his workout, creating an atmosphere of intimidation before following him outside the gym premises. What began as verbal abuse soon turned into violence.

“They were saying things that no one should have to hear, especially when you’re just minding your own business,” Singh said. “Anyone would be hurt by that. I’m still traumatised.”

According to his account, one of the men approached him aggressively once outside, moving close to his face before striking him without warning. The punch allegedly caused immediate bleeding from his nose. Witnesses nearby intervened as the situation intensified.

Video footage that later surfaced online reportedly captured the suspects shouting racial slurs during the confrontation. Among the remarks heard in the footage were statements such as “Go back to where you came from” and “You Indian dog.” The video has circulated widely on social media, drawing strong reactions and condemnation from community members.

Singh said the three men fled the scene in a sedan shortly after the assault, leaving him injured. Emergency services were contacted, and he was transported to hospital for medical treatment.

Doctors have reportedly advised that he may require specialist care and potentially surgery due to the extent of his injuries. Singh described the attack as the most severe incident of racial abuse he has faced.

“I’ve experienced racial comments before, but nothing like this,” he said. “It stays with you. You don’t just forget something like this.”

Victoria Police have launched an investigation and are reviewing CCTV footage from the gym and surrounding areas in an effort to identify the suspects. Authorities have not publicly confirmed whether any arrests have been made.

The incident has intensified discussion about the safety of members of the Indian diaspora in Australia, particularly international students and young professionals working in key sectors such as healthcare and education.

Community leaders have repeatedly called for stronger action to address hate-motivated violence. Advocacy groups argue that incidents like this create fear and uncertainty among migrants who contribute significantly to Australia’s workforce and economy.

The assault also follows a previously reported case in July 2025, when a 23-year-old Indian student, Amanpreet Singh, was hospitalised after a violent attack in central Adelaide. That incident was also described as racially motivated, with reports stating that the student sustained serious injuries after being allegedly assaulted by a group of five men.

Community representatives say repeated incidents risk undermining confidence among international communities and could have broader social implications if not addressed firmly.

Singh’s case has prompted renewed calls for accountability, with many urging authorities to treat racially charged assaults with urgency and seriousness.

“People come here to work hard, to study, to build a life,” Singh said. “No one should have to fear being attacked because of who they are or where they come from.”

Police have appealed for witnesses or anyone with information about the Victoria incident to come forward as investigations continue.
