Shillong-Bound IndiGo Flight Moved to Isolation Bay at Kolkata Airport After Bomb Threat Note Discovered !

Shillong-bound IndiGo flight shifted to isolation bay at Kolkata airport after handwritten bomb threat note found during pre-flight checks.

PRIME VISTA NEWS

A Shillong-bound IndiGo flight was shifted to an isolation bay at Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport on Saturday after a handwritten note claiming a bomb had been placed onboard was discovered during routine pre-flight checks, airport authorities confirmed.

The aircraft, scheduled to operate as IndiGo flight 6E 7304 to Shillong, had not begun passenger boarding when the alert was raised. According to officials from the Airports Authority of India (AAI), the note was found inside the aircraft’s lavatory by a member of the cabin crew during standard pre-departure procedures.

Security protocols were activated immediately.

Threat Detected Before Boarding

Officials said the early discovery of the note significantly reduced potential disruption, as no passengers were onboard the aircraft at the time. The crew informed airport security personnel without delay, triggering established emergency response measures.

An AAI spokesperson stated that the aircraft was moved to a designated isolation bay as a precautionary step in accordance with aviation security norms.

“The aircraft has been shifted to the isolation bay, and all procedures under the standard operating protocol are being followed,” the spokesperson said.

Authorities stressed that all threats are treated as credible until proven otherwise, regardless of initial assessments.

Aircraft Secured, Searches Underway

Following the relocation of the aircraft, bomb detection and disposal squads, along with aviation security teams, conducted a comprehensive inspection. As of the latest official update, no suspicious object or explosive device had been found.

The aircraft remains grounded pending the completion of security checks.

Airport operations elsewhere at the Kolkata airport continued normally, though officials confirmed that heightened vigilance measures were in place across the terminal and operational areas.

What an Isolation Bay Means

An isolation bay is a secure parking zone within airport premises used when an aircraft is subject to a potential security threat or technical hazard. The purpose is to separate the aircraft from active runways, terminals, and other operational zones while inspections are conducted.

Such facilities form part of international aviation safety standards and are routinely used in response to bomb threats, suspicious notes, or unidentified objects onboard aircraft.

By moving the IndiGo flight to an isolation bay, authorities ensured that any risk however remote would be contained away from passenger areas and active flight operations.

Standard Operating Procedures Activated

Airport officials emphasised that established standard operating procedures (SOPs) were implemented immediately after the threat was reported. These procedures typically include:

  • Securing the aircraft and restricting access
  • Deploying specialised bomb detection and disposal units
  • Coordinating with local law enforcement agencies
  • Reviewing CCTV footage and maintenance logs

Security agencies have begun examining how the handwritten note was placed inside the aircraft lavatory. CCTV footage from the aircraft’s turnaround period and access points at the airport is expected to form part of the investigation.

Officials have not ruled out the possibility of a hoax but reiterated that aviation safety demands a zero-tolerance approach to any threat.

Passenger Safety Prioritised

Because the threat was identified before boarding commenced, passengers were not exposed to any immediate risk or evacuation scenario. Airline sources indicated that safety remains the highest priority and that necessary arrangements would be made depending on the outcome of the inspection.

IndiGo had not released a detailed statement at the time of reporting, but airport officials confirmed that coordination between the airline and security agencies was ongoing.

Broader Context of Aviation Security

Indian airports operate under stringent security frameworks, particularly in light of periodic anonymous threats. Aviation experts note that while many such alerts ultimately prove to be false, adherence to protocol is critical to maintaining public confidence in air travel.

The swift detection of the note and immediate activation of emergency procedures reflect the layered security system in place at major airports, including Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport.

Authorities said further updates would be provided once the inspection is fully completed and investigations clarify how the threat originated.

For now, officials maintain that precaution, not panic, guided the response a reminder that aviation safety procedures are designed to anticipate even unlikely risks.
