After 30 Years of Delays – PM Modi Inaugurates Halwara Airport for Ludhiana:

After nearly three decades of prolonged delays and repeated demands, Ludhiana is finally set to receive a major boost in air connectivity. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually inaugurate the new terminal building at Halwara Airport on Sunday, marking a significant milestone for Punjab’s largest industrial city and the wider Malwa region.

The inauguration will take place during the Prime Minister’s one-day visit to Punjab on the occasion of Guru Ravidas Jayanti. Along with the Halwara airport inauguration, PM Modi will also formally rename Adampur Airport in Jalandhar district as Sri Guru Ravidas Ji Airport, fulfilling a long-standing demand related to the revered social reformer and saint.

Long-awaited connectivity for Ludhiana

Ludhiana, known as Punjab’s industrial and manufacturing hub, has long lacked direct air connectivity despite its economic importance. Over the years, the absence of a functional airport forced business travellers, exporters, and residents to depend on airports in Chandigarh and Delhi, often adding several hours to travel schedules.

The operationalisation of Halwara Airport is expected to reduce travel time significantly and provide faster access for industry, trade, and services. Officials believe the development will enhance the region’s attractiveness for investment and improve overall connectivity in central and southern Punjab.

Inauguration programme

According to the official schedule, the Prime Minister will arrive at Adampur Airport at around 3.35 pm. Between 3.45 pm and 3.55 pm, he will unveil the plaque renaming the airport and simultaneously inaugurate the Halwara airport terminal through video conferencing.

Following the inauguration, PM Modi will proceed to Dera Sachkhand Ballan in Jalandhar to attend a public function marking the 649th birth anniversary of Guru Ravidas. The visit is part of a series of engagements planned for the occasion.

Development of Halwara Airport

The new terminal building at Halwara Airport has been developed at a cost of ₹54.67 crore as a joint venture between the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the Punjab Government. The project had remained stalled for several years due to land acquisition issues, defence-related clearances, and operational constraints, as the site is located near an Indian Air Force base.

After sustained coordination between the Centre, the state government, and defence authorities, the project gained momentum and was completed within the approved framework.

According to a separate report, Punjabi Singer Simar Doraha was briefly detained in Canada, with family citing mental health concerns.

Terminal capacity and facilities

The terminal building spans an area of 2,000 square metres and has been designed to handle increasing regional air travel demand. It has a peak-hour passenger capacity of around 300 passengers and an annual handling capacity of up to two lakh passengers.

The airport has been designed as a sustainable terminal, incorporating modern passenger facilities while ensuring compliance with aviation safety and security norms.

Aircraft operations and approvals

Halwara Airport is capable of handling Code C aircraft, including Airbus A321 and Boeing 737 aircraft. The facility has received clearance from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS).

According to the Civil Aviation Ministry, Air India is expected to commence commercial flight operations from the first week of March 2026, after completing the remaining formalities with the Indian Air Force. Once operational, the airport is expected to gradually expand connectivity based on passenger demand and airline schedules.

Impact on Malwa region

The airport is expected to play a key role in improving air connectivity across the Malwa region, benefiting districts beyond Ludhiana. Improved access to air travel is expected to support not only industry and exports but also sectors such as healthcare, education, tourism, and emergency services.

Industry representatives have welcomed the development, noting that direct air connectivity will make Ludhiana more competitive as a manufacturing and export centre. Faster travel options are also expected to benefit professionals, students, and patients requiring frequent travel.

Political and administrative significance

The Prime Minister’s visit and the inauguration of major infrastructure projects come at a time when Punjab is preparing for Assembly elections. Observers note that the renaming of Adampur Airport and the visit to Dera Sachkhand Ballan carry administrative and symbolic importance.

The decision to rename the airport was cleared earlier this week following a request raised by the Punjab government. The move has been welcomed by several organisations as recognition of Guru Ravidas’s contribution to social reform and equality.

Pending naming demand

While Halwara Airport is set to become operational, a separate demand related to its naming remains unresolved. The Punjab Vidhan Sabha had unanimously passed a resolution in 2024 seeking to name the airport after freedom fighter Kartar Singh Sarabha.

However, the airport was officially notified as Halwara Airport last year, and no further decision on renaming has been announced so far.

Dignitaries expected

Several senior leaders and officials are expected to attend the events at Adampur, including Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, and Union Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu.

Security arrangements have been put in place to ensure smooth conduct of the programme.
