Pakistan allegedly carried out air strikes in Kabul, Kandahar and other parts of Afghanistan, hitting a Kam Air fuel depot near Kandahar airport. The Taliban condemned the attacks and warned they would not go unanswered.

Kabul:
Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have escalated again after the Taliban government accused Pakistan of carrying out bombings in multiple locations including Kabul and Kandahar, marking one of the most serious flare-ups between the neighbouring countries in recent years.

According to the Taliban administration, one of the strikes targeted a fuel depot belonging to the private airline Kam Air near Kandahar International Airport.

The attacks come amid a broader conflict that began last month after Pakistani air strikes inside Afghanistan that Islamabad said were aimed at militant strongholds.

Taliban Says Civilian Infrastructure Was Hit

Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said the bombing of the Kam Air fuel facility had serious implications because the depot supplies aviation fuel to several civilian operators.

“The company supplies fuel to civilian airlines as well as to aircraft operated by the United Nations,” Mujahid said.

He added that Pakistani forces had also carried out bombings in other areas, including the capital city of Kabul, with reports that women and children were among those killed.

According to Taliban officials, some residential homes were also struck during the attacks.

Mujahid warned that the aggression would “not go unanswered.”

Escalation After Weeks of Cross-Border Fighting

The latest accusations follow weeks of escalating hostilities between Pakistan and Afghanistan along their shared border.

The two countries share a 2,600-kilometre frontier, often referred to as the Durand Line, which has long been a flashpoint for tensions.

Pakistan previously conducted air strikes inside Afghan territory last month, claiming the operations targeted militant groups responsible for attacks inside Pakistan.

However, the Taliban government strongly rejected the justification, calling the strikes a violation of Afghanistan’s sovereignty.

Afghan forces subsequently carried out retaliatory attacks, leading to increased military tensions between the two sides.

Pakistan Yet to Respond to Allegations

As of now, Pakistan’s military has not publicly responded to the latest allegations made by the Taliban.

Officials in Islamabad have previously argued that militant groups operating from Afghan territory have carried out repeated attacks inside Pakistan.

Pakistan has long accused the Afghan Taliban government of allowing militants to find safe haven across the border.

However, the Taliban leadership denies these accusations, maintaining that militant violence in Pakistan is an internal security issue for Islamabad.

China Attempts to Mediate

Amid rising tensions, diplomatic efforts have been underway to prevent further escalation.

China has reportedly been attempting to mediate between the two sides and encourage dialogue.

According to earlier reports, Chinese diplomatic efforts helped ease some of the recent fighting along the border.

Pakistan’s foreign ministry spokesperson Tahir Andrabi confirmed that Islamabad and Beijing were engaged in a dialogue process regarding Afghanistan.

Analysts say China’s involvement reflects its broader regional interests, particularly security concerns linked to economic projects and stability in neighbouring countries.

Militancy Remains Core Dispute

The dispute between Pakistan and Afghanistan has increasingly centred on the issue of militancy.

Islamabad claims that militant groups operating from Afghan territory have carried out attacks on Pakistani security forces and civilians.

The Taliban government rejects these claims and argues that Pakistan is attempting to shift responsibility for its internal security challenges.

The disagreement has repeatedly strained relations between the two neighbours since the Taliban returned to power in 2021.

Regional Stability at Risk

Security analysts warn that renewed military confrontations between Pakistan and Afghanistan could destabilise the wider region.

The border region has historically been volatile, with militant activity, cross-border skirmishes, and political tensions frequently triggering crises.

While recent diplomatic efforts had helped reduce fighting along the border in recent days, the latest accusations of bombings threaten to reignite the conflict.

For now, observers are watching closely to see whether mediation efforts will succeed in preventing further escalation between the two countries.
