Prime Vista News
Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s ‘Badlaav Rally’ in Moga is set to mark BJP’s major political push in Punjab ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, highlighting alliances, outreach, and strategy.
Chandigarh:
All eyes are on Union Home Minister Amit Shah as he prepares to address his maiden ‘Badlaav Rally’ in Moga’s Killi Chahlan village on March 14 an event widely viewed as a key moment in shaping the Bharatiya Janata Party’s strategy for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
The rally, organised on a sprawling 83-acre site, features massive arrangements including a large pandal, extensive parking facilities, and langar services for attendees.
Carrying the slogan “Aao miljul ke badliye Punjab; sukhi rahe saada Punjab” (Let us unite to change Punjab; may Punjab remain prosperous), the event is also symbolically being held at the same venue where the ruling Aam Aadmi Party had earlier launched its campaign.
Political observers see the rally as the BJP’s formal launchpad for its campaign in Punjab ahead of the crucial 2027 polls.
BJP Steps Up Political Mobilisation
Senior BJP leaders including Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar and working president Ashwani Sharma have been actively overseeing preparations.
The party has held core committee meetings and extensive inspections of the rally venue, while workers have been mobilised across all 117 Assembly constituencies in Punjab to ensure a massive turnout.
The event is expected to send a strong signal that Punjab is now firmly on the national leadership’s political radar.
BJP’s Strategic Push Ahead of 2027 Elections
With the government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann nearing four years in power, the BJP is stepping up efforts to gain traction in a state where it has historically struggled to build a broad base.
Within the party, a key debate continues over whether to contest the elections independently or revive alliances.
One option being discussed is reviving ties with the Shiromani Akali Dal, traditionally led by Sukhbir Singh Badal.
However, uncertainty remains over whether the BJP would ally with the main SAD faction or other Akali leaders such as Giani Harpreet Singh and Prem Singh Chandumajra.
Shah Raises Religious Conversion Concerns
Ahead of the rally, Amit Shah also touched on the issue of religious conversions in Punjab while speaking at an event in Navi Mumbai marking the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur.
Shah warned that conversions driven by material incentives or allurement go against the spirit of the Sikh Guru’s sacrifice.
He urged the Punjab government, society, and citizens of all faiths to collectively address the issue and uphold the legacy of religious freedom and harmony.
Outreach Beyond Traditional Vote Base
Recognising its limited support among the dominant Jatt farming community, the BJP has intensified outreach to other social groups.
The party is focusing particularly on Dalit communities, which form a significant share of Punjab’s population.
Key leaders involved in this outreach include BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh and Dalit leaders such as Vijay Sampla and Avinash Chander.
As part of this strategy, a meeting was recently organised between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sant Niranjan Dass ahead of Guru Ravidas Jayanti.
The BJP has reportedly mapped nearly 250 deras across Punjab for continuous engagement with communities such as Ravidassias, Valmikis and other OBC groups.
Sensitive Issues Still In Play
Despite the outreach efforts, several politically sensitive issues remain.
Among them is the Bandi Singhs issue, referring to Sikh prisoners who supporters say should be released after completing their sentences.
Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu has publicly supported their release to signal goodwill toward the Sikh community.
However, the issue remains complicated, especially since some prisoners include those convicted in the assassination of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh.

BJP’s Vision for Punjab
Leaders within the BJP say the party is trying to balance Punjabiyat (Punjabi cultural identity) with its broader national vision.
Punjab faces unique challenges including border security concerns, agrarian distress, and economic stagnation.
Party leaders believe that addressing these issues while respecting the state’s history and sacrifices could help them gain broader support.
Sunil Jakhar highlighted this sentiment in a recent interview, stating that Punjabis value recognition, respect and belonging, not just financial packages.
Why The Moga Rally Matters
Political analysts say the Moga ‘Badlaav Rally’ could serve several purposes:
- Officially launch BJP’s 2027 election campaign in Punjab
- Test the party’s ground mobilisation strength
- Signal whether BJP will contest alone or with allies
- Reinforce outreach to new communities
For the BJP leadership, Punjab is increasingly being seen as the next major political frontier.
What To Watch Next
Amit Shah’s speech at the rally is expected to outline the party’s vision for Punjab, highlight governance issues under the current government, and possibly give hints about alliances or electoral strategy.
With the 2027 Assembly elections still two years away, the rally could mark the beginning of a long political battle in a state known for rapidly shifting political equations.
For now, the Moga rally will offer the first major indicator of the BJP’s seriousness about reshaping Punjab’s political landscape.
