The Supreme Court has granted bail to Pawan Bishnoi and Jagtar Singh in the 2022 Sidhu Moosewala murder case. The decision comes nearly four years after the Punjabi singer was shot dead in Punjab.
New Delhi:
The Supreme Court of India on Thursday granted bail to two accused Pawan Bishnoi and Jagtar Singh in connection with the 2022 killing of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala.
The decision was delivered by a bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta while hearing petitions filed by the two accused challenging an earlier order of the Punjab and Haryana High Court that had rejected their bail pleas.
The court’s ruling comes nearly four years after the high-profile murder of the singer, which had shocked the Punjabi music industry and triggered a nationwide debate on gang violence and security lapses.
Bail Granted After High Court Rejection
The two accused had approached the Supreme Court after the Punjab and Haryana High Court rejected their bail pleas on August 1, 2025.
In their petitions before the apex court, the accused argued that the trial was progressing slowly and that they had already spent several years in custody.
During the hearing, the Supreme Court bench examined arguments from both sides, including the defence and the Punjab government.
After considering the submissions, the court granted bail to both Pawan Bishnoi and Jagtar Singh.
Sidhu Moose Wala’s Killing Shocked The Nation
Sidhu Moosewala, whose real name was Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, was shot dead on May 29, 2022, in Punjab’s Mansa district.
The singer was just 28 years old at the time of his death.
The attack occurred a day after the Punjab government reduced his security cover, a decision that later sparked significant political controversy and public outrage.
According to investigators, Moosewala was ambushed by armed assailants who fired multiple rounds at his vehicle.
The brutal killing shocked fans across India and abroad, particularly within the Punjabi diaspora where Moosewala had a massive following.
Police Alleged Gang Rivalry Behind The Murder
According to the Punjab Police, the murder was the result of a rivalry between organised criminal gangs operating across India and abroad.
Investigators alleged that the crime involved members of the gang led by jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi.
Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar, an associate of Lawrence Bishnoi, had publicly claimed responsibility for the killing shortly after the incident.
Police said the attack was planned as part of a gang feud and involved several conspirators.
Allegations Against The Two Accused
Investigators had accused Pawan Bishnoi and Jagtar Singh of playing supporting roles in the murder conspiracy.
Allegations Mentioned In The Case
| Accused | Alleged Role |
|---|---|
| Pawan Bishnoi | Allegedly part of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang and accused of providing the vehicle used in the crime |
| Jagtar Singh | Allegedly helped conduct reconnaissance of Moosewala’s residence |
According to the police investigation, the vehicle used by the attackers was a Bolero that was allegedly arranged as part of the murder plan.
However, Pawan Bishnoi denied any connection to the gang.
Defence Argument In Supreme Court
During the hearing, Pawan Bishnoi’s lawyer Abhay Kumar argued that his client had been in custody for nearly four years and that the trial in the case was moving very slowly.
The lawyer told the court that the allegation against Bishnoi was primarily related to arranging the vehicle allegedly used in the crime.
“The allegation against me is that I provided the Bolero used in the crime. Only my surname matches. I have no relation with Lawrence Bishnoi,” the lawyer argued before the bench.
The defence also emphasised that the trial involved a large number of witnesses and could take several years to complete.
Trial Progress Still Slow
According to submissions made before the court, the case involves around 180 prosecution witnesses.
However, the defence pointed out that only one alleged eyewitness had been partly examined so far.
The lawyers argued that at the current pace of proceedings, the trial could take many years to conclude.
The defence therefore sought bail on the grounds of prolonged incarceration without a completed trial.
They cited several Supreme Court rulings stating that extended pre-trial detention without progress in the case can be grounds for granting bail.
Punjab Government Opposed Bail
The Punjab government opposed the bail applications and argued that the accused played a role in facilitating the murder.
Government lawyers told the court that investigators had discovered 41 phone calls between Pawan Bishnoi and co-accused individuals related to arranging the vehicle used in the attack.
The prosecution maintained that the accused should remain in custody considering the seriousness of the crime.
During the hearing, the Supreme Court bench also questioned officials about certain aspects of the investigation.
The judges asked how mobile phones were being used from inside jail facilities and whether prison authorities were aware of such communications.

Moosewala’s Legacy In Punjabi Music

Known for songs that often explored themes of identity, social issues and personal struggles, he had built a huge fan base not only in India but also in Canada, the United Kingdom and other parts of the world.
His sudden death sparked widespread mourning among fans and led to calls for stronger action against organised crime networks.
Even years after his death, his music continues to attract millions of listeners globally.
What Happens Next?
With the Supreme Court granting bail to Pawan Bishnoi and Jagtar Singh, the two accused are expected to be released from custody after completing legal formalities.
However, the criminal trial related to Sidhu Moosewala’s murder will continue in the courts.
Legal experts say the case could still take several years to conclude given the large number of witnesses and the complexity of the investigation.
For now, the court’s decision marks another significant development in one of the most closely watched criminal cases in recent years.
